I think we can all agree that winter went on long enough. We’re done with those cold, rainy, icy, snowy days and we’re dreaming about those hot summer days in vancouver. But the transition from winter to summer can feel like a long one — especially if your vancouver home is still clinging to a wintery motif and salt-crusted doormats. Hurry summer along by freshening up your space in springtime with these four simple tips. Embrace the bright and beachy vibes of natural fabrics and furniture.
Shop your closet for beachy décor
Sun hats and straw bags aren’t just for summer days at the beach and trips to the farmer’s market. To make a spring-inspired statement in your home, show off your favourite straw bags and hats.
I love to take things that I actually use daily during the spring and summer and display them in a way that becomes décor. It’s pretty and practical.
Try hanging a group of straw hats on a wall or displaying a straw bag on a door handle to switch up the look of a room without making any permanent changes. Not only does it give your space an energizing beach home feel, but it’s also easy to grab a hat on your way out to enjoy a sunny afternoon.
The great thing about each of these examples is that they are easy to tuck away when the weather inevitably turns cold again!
Play with spring colours
During the winter months in vancouver, cozy blankets and fuzzy slippers are likely to have a permanent home next to the couch. Now that spring is just days away, consider switching out those blankets for colourful decorative pillows. You can find affordable pillows or pillow covers in seasonal prints and colours at stores like H&M Home or IKEA.
Spring colours (think robin’s egg blue, minty greens, soft pinks) are lovely all year round, but you might not be ready to commit a big budget to incorporate them into your home.
Another simple but more permanent option is to use paint to add a pop of colour. Consider painting a door, dresser or side table to make a statement without having to commit to a whole room re-do. Hang inexpensive art prints in bright spring colours, or a trendy circular mirror that will bounce that warm sunshine around the room.
Bring the outside in
There’s nothing better than seeing the first signs of spring after a long and cold winter. Bringing natural greens into your home is another easy and affordable way to bring spring indoors, but selecting and arranging plants or flowers can be intimidating.
Stick to one colour and snipping plants from your own garden.
My go-to for arrangements are big leafy branches, and I usually source these from my yard. It’s free, adds a big impact, and always looks good.
If you prefer flowers, opt for one colour.. ex: group of white tulips which will make you look like a pro even if you aren’t confident about your floral arranging skills.
Add natural textures
Like your straw hats or beach bags, furniture and linens in natural textures and materials will quickly make any space feel more like a beachside home.
Beachy textures like jute, wicker and sisal add an extra summery touch.
Besides replacing your beat-up winter mats with their woven jute counterparts, find unique pieces in natural materials to liven up the space — like a rattan bench for the entryway or a wicker patio set for the front porch or backyard. These lightweight and durable pieces are excellent in-season additions to virtually any room.
Another easy way to make a visual impact by adding new textures to a room is to update your linens.
Switch up your bedding and blankets to light, more breathable materials, for example, you might change your flannel bedding for a linen coverlet.
Consider updating drapes and curtains to more light-weight linen, bamboo blinds or even delicate lace curtains — they offer privacy but still let the light through, and when the sun is at the right angle, you’ll see the shadow of the lace pattern around the room, talk about charming!
No matter what your design style is, adding beachy accessories, natural textures, spring colours or lush greens into your home is sure to make any space feel refreshed for spring.
