10 Top Window Treatments

Many window treatments allow for total control of how much sunlight enters your home. This allows you to benefit from natural sunlight during the day, giving you the option to keep the artificial lights off and save energy. On the flip side, choosing to have your blinds or other window treatment closed on hot, sunny days helps keep your home cool, saving you energy costs in cooling. The energy efficiency benefits of window treatments work both ways.

Privacy

Some days, we want an abundance of sunlight to light up our homes. Other days, we’d rather keep the blinds shut. It’s important to have this choice, especially for privacy. As much as we (sometimes) enjoy our neighbours, there’s always the nosy one waving from the street as they see you through the windows. Window treatments, especially blinds and sheers, give you the option of privacy.

Design/Aesthetics

Of course, one of the most important reasons we look to window treatments is their ability to transform your home. Your lovely tailored valances certainly bring the room together in terms of style, but they do much more than just look stylish. Window treatments bring many benefits to the home.

1. Roman Shades

It’s hard to think of a time when Roman shades won’t be in style. Time and time again they make a name for themselves as being one of the most classic and stylish window treatments you can install in your home. Whether you’re looking for a solid fabric or a patterned statement piece, you can choose from hundreds of options which can fit in almost any space.

2. Woven Wood Shades

It seemed like every home décor blogger showcased woven wood shades and it doesn’t look like the trend is ending any time soon. You’ll love this look if you’re seeking a farmhouse or coastal vibe, as the texture invites a casual and comfortable atmosphere that doesn’t take itself too seriously. You wouldn’t want this look if you have an extremely formal or ultra-modern space.

3. Wood Blinds

Woodgrain is certainly making a comeback – whether you prefer the easy installation of wood blinds or the timeless sophistication of wood shutters, these window treatments can fit in almost anywhere. If you have a historic home, match the wood blinds to stained wood trim or paneling in your home.

5. Solar shade

Solar shades are also known as “window sunglasses” for their opaque design that allows you to preserve your outside view while also providing considerable light control. Available in openness factors ranging from 3- to 14-percent, you will want to choose a higher openness to let in more light and preserve your view.

6. Pleated shades

Pleated shades are made from a single piece of fabric with pleats that collapse and stack neatly as you raise the shade. This slat-like effect gives your home a casual, semi-sheer look that allows a considerable amount of light to filter through the window.

Panel track blinds are made out of a series of fabric panels that slide back and forth to give you optimal light control and privacy.
These blinds are a modern alternative to vertical blinds for covering large windows or sliding glass doors.

8. Drapery

Also referred to as curtains, can be used to create an elegant, casual or a sophisticated look. May draw across the rod or remain stationary on either or both sides of the window. Curtains come in a variety of shapes, materials, sizes, colours and patterns, and they often have their own sections within department stores, while some shops are completely dedicated to selling curtains. Curtains vary according to clean-ability, ultraviolet light deterioration, oil and dust retention, noise absorption, fire resistance, and life span. Curtains may be moved by hand, with cords, by press-button pads or remote-controlled computers. Measuring curtain sizes needed for each window varies greatly according to the type of curtain needed, window size, and type and weight of curtain.

9. Sheer Curtains (Net Curtains)

A sheer or net curtain is one that is made from translucent (sheer) fabric. The sheerness of a fabric is expressed in 3 main characteristics (extremely rare, very thin, barely visible). The materials which can be made translucent include gossamer, silk, rayon or nylon. Sheer fabric comes in a wide variety of colours, but for curtains white and shades of white, such as cream, winter white, eggshell, and ivory are popular. They are sometimes referred to as privacy curtains; during the day they allow you to see from the inside out whilst preventing people outside from seeing directly into the space.
