Would You Stay in an Ice Hotel? Chilling Out at Hôtel de Glace

In Canada, complaining about the weather is a national pastime. Despite our groaning over fleeting hot summers or long frigid winters, we also take a certain pride in the fact we can handle the elements–especially when it concerns our formidable frozen months.

So it comes as no surprise cold temperatures are an inspiration for a glacial pop-up hotel in  Quebec. Aptly named Hôtel de Glace (direct translation: Ice Hotel), this 42-room property in Valcartier, just 35 km from downtown Quebec City, is the only one of its kind in North America and takes the whole concept of loving our snowy season to new levels of cool.

Offering the intimacy of an igloo (and only available during the winter), the hotel and its furniture are made entirely of ice and snow. This means room temperatures must be kept between an icy -3C and -5C to keep the building from melting away.
If you think that's chilly, consider yourself lucky–outside, temperatures in Quebec City can range between -7C and -16C in the winter months (and often reach -30C). By comparison, your ice hotel room is relatively toasty!

Each room has beautifully-crafted ice sculptures, with blocks of ice serving as the base of your bed. Thankfully, each bed of ice is topped with a wood base and a cushy mattress for guest comfort. Staying cozy is important, so the hotel provides arctic sleeping bags and pillows to make your stay enjoyable.

If you're worried about staying warm while you sleep, opt for the suite with a built-in fireplace. It not only promises to keep you warm, but guests are also treated to a bottle of rosé champagne served in ice flutes.

Not luxurious enough for you? Spoil yourself and book the hotel's largest and most opulent suite: The Deluxe, which features a fireplace and private hot tub and sauna. This suite is ideally suited for a special occasion or for couples seeking a little romance.

Is a glacial wedding in your future? Hôtel de Glace offers an ice chapel specifically made for frozen nuptials. Wedding packages range from an intimate elopement for two to a 40-guest bash, including arrival in a horse carriage for the bride and groom.

Although hibernation is a good strategy during your stay, you can also brace the elements in the hotel's Nordic area, complete with hot tubs and a sauna under the stars; or opt for the ice skating path, which serves up beautiful views of the city.
Yes, our winters can be long, but the beauty of Hôtel de Glace may help take away the sting. Just don't forget your long underwear! Not sure a night in the Ice Hotel is right for you but still want to make your mark in Quebec? Explore properties for sale today.
