5 Ways to Bring Natural Elements Into Your Interiors

For those who love the outdoors, there's no reason to lock this affection out of your interior design. While skylights and sun tunnels can blur the dividing lines, there are unlimited ways to design organically, and bring your favourite landscape, inside!
Here's an easy blueprint to help establish your landscape look.

1. Choose your favourite outdoor locations for inspiration

Where do you find yourself feeling most energized and restored? Paddling on a calm northern lake to a secluded campsite? Following a switchback trail in the shade of ancient oaks? Climbing the face of Mount Asgard? What relaxes and inspires you? By examining your outdoor pursuits, you can pull out bits of design inspiration and simulate them at home. If an isolated cabin in the woods is your idea of heaven, you might feel right at home with a rustic theme, but if you love to sail, consider incorporating more nautical elements into your design.

2. Source inspiration from your outdoor interests and activities

Are you an avid camper, hiker or canoer? Antique oars and painted walking sticks add texture to lonely corners. For the birdwatching enthusiast, display bird and plant guides with antique brass binoculars or magnifying glasses with unique handles. Enlarge your own images of your favourite camping or picnics spots or display custom posters of Canada historic parks. Keep things cozy even if the campfire isn't lit with jacquard wool blankets, shearling and faux fur throws. Of course, the easiest way to bring the outdoors is-real plants!

3. Show your true colours

In the 1980s, designing your wardrobe's colour palette was based on the popular “seasonal colour analysis.” The methodology determined what colours best suited an individual's complexion for cosmetics and clothing. Of course, this same rationale can be applied to the walls in your home. Are you all over spring fever (light and cool colours), summer-lovin’ (light and warm), autumn's grace (deep and warm) or winter cozy (deep and cool)?
Maybe you want to base your palette on your favourite time of the day—because it's all about chroma, baby! Do you prefer intense, pure colours or soft and muted shades? Are you revved up by sunrise or more of a sunset personality? Let your best time of day surround you as you choose the ideal paint colours for your walls.

Looking for something a little more dramatic? Consider an easy-to-install landscape wallpaper. Lose yourself in the realism of a Lhotse mountain mural, a woodland forest or the aurora borealis. Or, better yet, upload your own photo to create the bespoke landscape that resonates with you the most.

4. Become a hunter-gatherer

Some of the best finds can't be bought. Go outside and observe what surrounds you. Pick up a few unusual stones, a curl of birch bark, a blue jay feather. Mason jars are a convenient way to display windblown bird nests or paper wasp combs. Gather acorns, pine cones and shiny horse chestnuts. These items are timeless and a fun way to fill a letterpress drawer with instant curio. Bundle feathers like a bouquet. There are no rules when it comes to nature.

5. Don't forget your other senses

Forget overly sweet, artificial scents and go for candles or diffusers smelling like all the things you love: balsam fir, Scotch pine, campfire and rain. Steep some herbal tea and it will be hard to determine if you're inside or out when you design naturally. Another great way to bring the outdoors in is with natural outdoor sounds–perfect for a quiet, meditative moment. Close your eyes, relax and imagine yourself surrounded by nature.
