5 Amazing Tips To A Clutter-Free Home

Now, I know it's easier said than done, especially if you're not the most meticulous person out there and you have your hands exceptionally full already, but having a clutter free home is a very real possibility for you!

 Yaletown-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

All you need is little commitment to some basic principles, habits and tips that will help you stay organized.

1. Purge the Unnecessary Things

Our homes are full of things, hence the importance to purge often. Daily, weekly, monthly; whichever works fine for you. Untidiness begins to appear most prominently when we own too many things. The fewer items we own, the easier it is to keep clutter at a minimum and our space tidy.

The first and I believe the most important step in keeping your home clutter-free is to remove the excessive stuff contending with our lives, time and energy.

In your process of removing the excess, you should come up with a working definition of clutter to guide you on this journey. Define what clutter means to you; too much stuff in too small a space, anything that you no longer use or love or anything that leads to a feeling of disorganization. With that as your guiding filter, the rest is easier.

Junk drawers full of unneeded items (rubber bands, old batteries, or old keys), closets full of clothes you no longer wear and decorations that are no longer meaningful and/or outdated; they should all be either given away or thrown out.

2. Slow down

Once you shed the excesses, be slow to accumulating others. I know that as long as we are alive, we consume. It cannot be avoided, because human wants could be extremely insatiable - especially in today's society. But if we can effectively manage the invasion of possessions into our homes, clutter can be managed.

To slow the accumulation of things in your home, change the way you think while shopping. Understand that your purchases cost far more than the price on the sticker. Each one will require time, energy, and effort once they enter your home.

So before making a purchase, ask yourself these questions:

• Do I need it?
• Is there space for this in my house?
• Am I buying it for the right or wrong reasons?

3. Keep "Friends" Together.

The key word here is to organize.

When things are not organized according to their type, it's easy to keep living in a cluttered space. You don't want to be searching for a piece of socks or tie where you have your suits neatly hung. This may cause you to scatter everything in an attempt to get the handkerchief out.

Learn to stash like items together and you'll be able to easily sort through and think better in your living space.

4. Create Houses for Your Pets

Now that you've slowly built a new routine and you're working really hard at maintaining it, it won't be a bad idea if you get the pets to live outdoors.

Are you a pet lover? You probably have cats or dogs (or both) all over the house. While you may have trained them to do things appropriately, we all know the responsibility that comes with living with a pet. It's a huge one.

Living indoors with you may add to the clutter in your home. The cats' rubber toys or the dogs' plastic bones littering the floor at every turn. This can be placed in check if you get them a proper outdoor home for pets.

5. Replace Items after Use

Basically, all I'm saying here is, Maintain the good work you've already started.

If you open it, close it. If you finish it, replace it. If it's full, empty it. If you take it off, hang it up. If it's dirty, wash it. If it's garbage trash it. Brought in the laundry? Fold them.

It may seem like you don't have time to do these things right away (or motivation), but if you do it anyway, you will be much happier and have saved yourself an amazing amount of time. I think this is one of my biggest tricks to being organized. I don't let things "sit" and they never accumulate into a big task.

Slowly, it would become a habit that you won't ever think of not doing it.

Bonus Tip!

Either first thing in the morning, or just before bed, EVERY DAY, take at least 5 minutes to whip around your home and put away some things that you might have missed throughout the day and make everyone in your house do the same, including your kids.

10 EASY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK INVITING IN UNDER 10 MINUTES

Have you ever been invited into someone’s house and instantly felt welcomed and relaxed? It’s doesn’t even have to be someone you know very well, but you still feel right at home in their house. There’s actually a reason for that, and it doesn’t have as much to do with the design and style as it does with creating an inviting atmosphere where guests feel welcomed and at home.

                          Yaletown-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

One of the most important things you can do as a host is to make your home look inviting. Guests should feel welcomed and free to relax the minute they enter your home. And though this sounds like a lot of work or too time consuming to deal with when you’re expecting company, it’s so easy you can actually do it ten minutes before your guests arrive and no one will be the wiser.

10 EASY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK INVITING IN UNDER 10 MINUTES

1. Let in the light. Nothing says “welcome” like natural light, so open up those blinds and curtains and let some light in! Dark, dingy rooms just aren’t as inviting as light, airy spaces. So do yourself and your guests a favour and open up those blinds! All that natural light can also help a small room look bigger, so it’s really an added bonus for your home!
2. Clear the clutter. Nobody wants to have to push aside a bunch of random household clutter just to be able to sit on a couch or at a table. It’s not fun for the people who live there, and it’s certainly not appealing for guests. Create a nice, clean space for guests so they’ll feel invited and welcome.
3. Create a space where people can relax. Wherever you like to do your entertaining, make sure it’s a comfy area where people can relax. So whether that’s on your living room couches, at your dining room table, or on your back porch, make sure it’s a comfortable space that’s not too overly formal where people can feel free to relax without worrying about messing something up.
4. Have a place for drinks. An area for guests to set down their drinks invites them to stay awhile. A decent coffee table or ottoman and coasters in the living room will give your guests the impression that you actually want them to stay and chat awhile!

6. Keep your home at a comfortable temperature. It’s never fun to visit someone’s home and be overly hot or cold, so keep your guests in mind if you typically keep your home at a higher or lower temperature than normal. You can always switch it back to the way it was when they’re gone. 😉
7. Light a candle. Candles not only provide a warm atmosphere, but they can also create a pleasant scent that can make your home smell wonderful. You can also use a wax or oil warmer to help give your home a boost in the scent department. If you or your guests are sensitive to fragrances.

8. Open up pathways. Walk around your home and pretend you’re someone visiting for the first time. Is it easy to navigate around, or are there things in the way that you’ve forgotten about because it’s become second nature for you to step over or around them? An open layout that’s easy to navigate around is especially helpful for people who aren’t familiar with your home. Make sure guests don’t have to trip over a toys or a pile of magazines just to sit at the couch. This is especially important in smaller homes where furniture and clutter quickly add up.
9. Designate a place for coats and shoes. Not only will this help your home look more organized and clean, but it’s helpful for guests so they don’t feel like their belongings are in the way and cluttering up your home.
10. Hang a wreath. There’s just something about having a wreath hanging on your front door that makes a home look so welcoming and inviting. It’s an easy way to add some instant seasonal cheer to your home.
Luckily, it’s not too hard to create a warm atmosphere and make your home look inviting. In fact, I’m willing to bet that you already do a few of these things. Just a few tweaks here and there and your guests will feel so at home that they might never want to leave! 😉

HEALTHY WAYS TO scent YOUR HOME naturally

 Vancouver-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

Everyone loves to have a good smelling home, right? ;)
Keeping a clean home helps, and is necessary, of course, but adding in a little fragrance is just fun.
Plus, natural scents and oils have health benefits, can be antimicrobial and antibacterial too.
Nature creates the most beautiful smelling scents anyway!
And who doesn’t want to scent their home naturally?
I’m here to tell you, once you stop using the “fake” stuff, you will not want to ever go back.
The fake stuff will smell too strong, too chemically and just not natural.
Don’t get me wrong, the natural stuff can be strong too.
But strong in a completely different way. :)
So, today I’m sharing some different ways you can scent your home naturally.
I love essential oils and have been using them for 15+ years now.
I can’t wait to share a few of my favourite recipe blends and uses with you!
M a k e   Y o u r  O w n   P o t p o u r r i
  • Simmer fresh sliced orange or lemons (or the peels) with cinnamon and cloves in water.
Perfect for a quick lift or after cooking.
  • Make your own potpourri with dried fruitscinnamon sticks, cloves, etc. (you can simmer this too)
  • Use the dried potpourri in and around your home in decorative dishes.
Freshen the scent from time to time with essential oils.
C a r p e t   D e o d o r i z e r
  • Mix 1 cup (or more, as needed) of baking soda in a bowl and add 20-30 drops of the pure, undiluted essential oil of your choice.
  • Store in a sifter shaker bottle or just shake it out by hand onto the carpet. (note: can by clumpy without the sifter)
  • Let sit for at least 30 minutes (or longer) and then vacuum the rug/carpet.
N a t u r a l   R o o m   S p r a y
  • Mix 4 oz of distilled water with the 60-80 drops of essential oils, shake before use… or….
  • You can also use 2 oz of high proof alcohol (vodka or perfumer’s alcohol) with 2 oz of distilled water.
Be sure to mix the essential oils into the alcohol before adding the water.
    Shake before use.
  • Use spray bottles like these to store the spray.
  • Label them with these cute chalkboard labels. (favourite recipes are below)
  • This can be used to refreshen the air or on linens. (test on linens as some essential oils can stain)
  • Good for freshening the carpet in autos too.
C l e a n i n g   &   D u s t i n g
  • I use the Swiffer Sweepers (the dry ones) to catch dog hair, dust and dirt tracked in.
They are quick and easy and great for hardwood or tile floors, which my entire downstairs is comprised of.
I will usually spritz the sheet with my “natural room spray” above before attaching it to the sweeper.
This gives the entire space a gentle hint of scent! (and remember, many essential oils are antimicrobial and antibacterial so you get that benefit as well!)
  • Another Swiffer product I like to use are the Swiffer Dusters.
I will do the same exact thing, spritz and dust! This is such a nice way to scent your home naturally!
A i r   V e n t   S c e n t
  • I will sometimes use drops of essential oil on a piece of paper and attach to the inside of my floor vents.
(I usually use heavier weight paper (these work good) and punch a hole in it, then tie a string through and around the underside of the vent.)
Be sure you make it secure so it doesn’t slip down the vent hole!
When the heat/air blows through it, the scent will gently blow through the air as well.
  • Place a small piece of fabric or the heavy weight paper, scented with essential oils, on the corner of your filter in your return.
You don’t want to cover the whole filter, just one small corner is enough to disperse some scent through the air.
  • Place one of the papers linked above, scented with essential oils, under the seat in your car.
And now my favourite way to scent my home…..
D i f f u s e r
  • This diffuser has served me very well. I recently came across this other style diffuser by the same company and it’s functional and beautiful.
I have bought multiple of each for my home AND many for gifts.
    I love them!
Diffusers disperse scent better than anything I’ve ever used.
These particular diffusers work better than any I’ve tried so far. (I’ve tried several) They work very well.
I also love the function of ‘set it and leave it’. They turn off automatically once empty!
Did I mention how much I love this?? ;)
  • Just add water, essential oils and viola….beautiful, natural, oh-so-good smelling, healthy scented air!
R e c i p e s (these are all “one part” or “one drop”, multiply accordingly for the recipes above)
  • 8 – Orange
    5 – Lemon
    1 – Black Pepper
  • 8 – Peppermint
    3 – Lavender
  • 8 – Peppermint
    4 – Lemon
  • 6 – Lavender
    4 – Lemon
    2 – Geranium
  • 2 – Cinnamon
    1 – Clove
    2 – Fir Needle
    4 – Orange
  • 2 – Lavender
    4 – Lemon
  • 6 – Orange
    1 – Cinnamon
    1 – Clove
  • 4 – Lemon
    1 – Frankincense
    1 – Black Pepper
  • 8 – Lemon
    2 – Frankincense
    2 – Black Pepper
    1 – Vetiver
And now a recipe to make your own Vanilla “Essential” Oil and Extract (there’s not a ‘true’ essential oil for Vanilla)
Extract: ( I use this one in the diffuser without any issues)
  • Place 8 vanilla beans (cut opened) into dark amber bottles and pour high alcohol content vodka (high proof) to fill.
Let it sit for about 2 months, or longer. Be sure to shake at least weekly.
Vanilla Oil: (for personal use, lotions or in potpourri, etc)
  • Place 4 vanilla beans (cut open) in a bottle and fill with Jojoba oil. Let sit for 3-4 months/shake weekly.
***You can use Madagascar or Tahitian Vanilla Beans. (I love and use both! I can almost promise you’ve never smelled anything so wonderful! ;) )
A note about essential oils:
  • Try to buy and use 100% pure, undiluted (and organic, if possible) therapeutic essential oils.
  • Keep in mind that essential oils will not smell the same or exactly the same every time.
They come from different sources, different times of the year, different regions, etc.
  • There are varying versions of many. Such as Lavender, I use “Fine French” because I love the scent best (it’s a bit pricier).
The cheaper, 40/42 Lavender is a bit more medicinal smelling.
  • There are also varying versions of Geranium. I use and like the Geranium Bourbon. (Note: again, they may smell slightly different from each supplier)
  • You can use Litsea Cubeba in place of Lemon. It has a wonderful citrus smell and is a bit stronger than regular Lemon which can be faint and short lived.
  • You can also use Lemongrass in place of Lemon but I don’t like it as well. It’s a bit more grassy, pungent and overpowering to me.
  • Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s totally safe. What I mean is this, you still need to use caution with the oils.
They can discolor wood if spilled, ruin the finish, irritate the skin, etc.
Just use common sense as you would with anything. (remember, these are super highly concentrated oils from natural sources….consider the “water is super healthy (and needed!) but even drinking too much water is dangerous” analogy!)
  • Relax, enjoy and have fun mixing and using nature’s wonder! :)
