7 eco-friendly decorating ideas for your home

Do your bit for the planet and keep these products in mind when you next come to revamp your living space.

vancouver-realtor-carmen-leal

It's never been easier to find eco-friendly products. If you want to do your bit for the planet and you're planning to redecorate your home, make sure you choose these green alternatives to help you significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

1. Buy pre-loved

The most effective way of keeping your carbon footprint as small as can be during redecoration is to buy pre-loved furniture and decorations. Head to eBay and Gumtree, where you're sure to find a whole host of vintage bargains that will allow you to revamp your home without doing any damage to the planet.

You can also do your bit for the planet by listing the furniture you're replacing online or giving them to a friend, family member, or charity.

2. Choose your wood carefully

If you have your heart set on a new piece of furniture but want to do your bit to help combat deforestation, make sure it's made from FSC certified wood. Products made from this sustainably sourced wood are marked by the FSC's 'tick tree' logo. By buying furniture marked with this organisation's stamp, you can guarantee it has been made from wood that was harvested according to the 10 FSC principles, meaning it's a lot better for the environment than standard furniture.

3. Choose thermal curtains

By replacing your standard curtains with their thermal alternatives, you'll reduce your energy bills for years to come. This is as good for your wallet as it is for the planet, making this one a no-brainer. Pick up a plain thermal curtain lining and hang it behind your curtains of choice.

4. Buy low-VOC paint

One of the most affordable ways to give a room a new lease of life is by giving it a fresh lick of paint. However, it's important to know that not all paints are created equal. In fact, some paints may contain a variety of nasties called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). 'These can release toxic emissions into the atmosphere for years after they've been put on your walls. This is harmful for the planet and even worse for you and your family, who could be breathing those chemicals in for years to come.

Until recently, VOCs were essential to the performance of paint. However, recent developments mean safer paints are readily available — make sure you pick up a tin labelled 'low-VOC'.

5. Avoid carpet

If you want to be as environmentally friendly as possible while redecorating your home, avoid carpet. Full of chemicals and pollutants, it not only harms the planet when it's manufactured, but also releases all kinds of toxins into your home during its lifespan. Plus, even the most hardwearing carpet only lasts around a decade before it needs to be replaced.

When it comes to replacing your flooring, always opt for real wood if you want to be as eco-friendly as possible.

6. Choose the right candles

There's nothing quite like the warm glow of a candle to create an ambience in your home on an evening. However, you need to be careful which candles you choose if you want to do as little harm to the planet as possible. A lot of cheap candles contain the same harmful VOCs as standard paints, while they might also contain metal in the wick to keep it burning upright. So, always pick candles made from natural materials like soy or beeswax and scented with essentials oils to avoid those toxins.

7. Add plants to your home

Houseplants breathe in carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen. They also soak up a lot of harmful toxins and pollutants, purifying the air. So, for a simple (and stylish) way to boost your green credentials, add a houseplant or two to every room in your home.

A Little Summer Style Goes a Long Way This Spring

I think we can all agree that winter went on long enough. We’re done with those cold, rainy, icy, snowy days and we’re dreaming about those hot summer days in vancouver. But the transition from winter to summer can feel like a long one — especially if your vancouver home is still clinging to a wintery motif and salt-crusted doormats. Hurry summer along by freshening up your space in springtime with these four simple tips. Embrace the bright and beachy vibes of natural fabrics and furniture.

vancouver-realtor-carmen-leal

Shop your closet for beachy dΓ©cor

Sun hats and straw bags aren’t just for summer days at the beach and trips to the farmer’s market. To make a spring-inspired statement in your home, show off your favourite straw bags and hats.

I love to take things that I actually use daily during the spring and summer and display them in a way that becomes dΓ©cor. It’s pretty and practical.

Try hanging a group of straw hats on a wall or displaying a straw bag on a door handle to switch up the look of a room without making any permanent changes. Not only does it give your space an energizing beach home feel, but it’s also easy to grab a hat on your way out to enjoy a sunny afternoon.

The great thing about each of these examples is that they are easy to tuck away when the weather inevitably turns cold again!

Play with spring colours

During the winter months in vancouver, cozy blankets and fuzzy slippers are likely to have a permanent home next to the couch. Now that spring is just days away, consider switching out those blankets for colourful decorative pillows. You can find affordable pillows or pillow covers in seasonal prints and colours at stores like H&M Home or IKEA.

Spring colours (think robin’s egg blue, minty greens, soft pinks) are lovely all year round, but you might not be ready to commit a big budget to incorporate them into your home.

Another simple but more permanent option is to use paint to add a pop of colour. Consider painting a door, dresser or side table to make a statement without having to commit to a whole room re-do. Hang inexpensive art prints in bright spring colours, or a trendy circular mirror that will bounce that warm sunshine around the room.

Bring the outside in

There’s nothing better than seeing the first signs of spring after a long and cold winter. Bringing natural greens into your home is another easy and affordable way to bring spring indoors, but selecting and arranging plants or flowers can be intimidating.

Stick to one colour and snipping plants from your own garden.

My go-to for arrangements are big leafy branches, and I usually source these from my yard. It’s free, adds a big impact, and always looks good.

If you prefer flowers, opt for one colour.. ex: group of white tulips which will make you look like a pro even if you aren’t confident about your floral arranging skills.

vancouver-realtor-carmen-leal

Add natural textures

Like your straw hats or beach bags, furniture and linens in natural textures and materials will quickly make any space feel more like a beachside home.

Beachy textures like jute, wicker and sisal add an extra summery touch.

Besides replacing your beat-up winter mats with their woven jute counterparts, find unique pieces in natural materials to liven up the space — like a rattan bench for the entryway or a wicker patio set for the front porch or backyard. These lightweight and durable pieces are excellent in-season additions to virtually any room.

Another easy way to make a visual impact by adding new textures to a room is to update your linens.

Switch up your bedding and blankets to light, more breathable materials, for example, you might change your flannel bedding for a linen coverlet.

Consider updating drapes and curtains to more light-weight linen, bamboo blinds or even delicate lace curtains — they offer privacy but still let the light through, and when the sun is at the right angle, you’ll see the shadow of the lace pattern around the room, talk about charming!

No matter what your design style is, adding beachy accessories, natural textures, spring colours or lush greens into your home is sure to make any space feel refreshed for spring.

7 Tips for Planting a Food Garden

Here’s how you can create a food garden, whether you have a small patio, sunny spot in front of your house, or a sprawling backyard.

Vancouver-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

Create a container food garden on your patio

Many edibles do very well when grown in pots and there are plenty of dwarf varieties of plants to choose from.

I always recommend leafy greens, because they’re easy to grow in containers, and they do well in partial sun. Tomato varieties are really great, too. Just make sure you pick things that you’ll enjoy eating.

If you want to grow lots of food, you can start from a seed indoors, or outdoors when the ground has completely thawed— but if you’re just doing one or two tomato plants, it makes more sense to buy seedling plants instead.

Don’t feel like you’re cheating if you buy a plant somebody else has grown.

If you’re growing produce for your community, some of the faster-growing options include salad greens and spinach. Even if your property only gets four or five hours of sun a day, you can still grow plenty of delicious vegetables like carrots, beets, garlic and kale that can make a real difference.

vancouver-realtor-carmen-leal

Lacking space? Look up!

Homeowners and condo dwellers can also grow edibles efficiently, thanks to vertical gardening. For example, you can plant shallow-rooted plants like strawberries, radishes and herbs in gutters and hang them along a fence.

I’ve seen people grow vining plants from a balcony box, either growing them down or to the side. It’s a fantastic idea in an urban setting to make the use of your space.

Try vining produce like cucumbers, pole beans, summer squash or melons.

Vancouver-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

Get the kids involved

Looking for a family-friendly backyard project that also teaches children about where their food comes from? Let them decide what to plant.

See what interests them; Different kids will be attracted to different things in the garden.

That could translate into a bug-themed garden or plants to attract birds. Or you can do fun projects like a garden teepee that you grow pole beans on or maybe a sunflower house hideout.

Vancouver-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

Set up some straw bales

For people living in urban areas with no green space at all, take a second look at your driveway or the alleyway between your home and your neighbours’; it’s the perfect spot for a straw bale food garden.

t’s a really easy, quick way to start: The bale is both your growing medium and your container.

Three to four weeks before you plant, water your bales and add fertilizer so it starts to decompose. Then, plant right into the bale.

You can also put bales on a patio.

Vancouver-Realtor-Carmen-Leal

Don’t forget your front yard

If you have more space or sun out front plant your food garden there.

When you use that space, there’s a whole community aspect to it.

You may even want to put up signs in the garden so people can harvest some of your prolific edibles like mint or chives.

How to handle pests

Your edible garden can be an outdoor buffet to local wildlife, and many homeowners prefer not to spread pesticides everywhere.

Squirrels and raccoons can get into all sorts of spaces unless you physically exclude them, and you can do that with wire mesh when you’re gardening on a smaller scale. But sometimes you just have to accept that you’re going to share, so grow things like currents, cherry tomatoes or smaller fruits that are really prolific. This way, there’s lots for you, and for the birds and squirrels.

No yard? No problem!

Even if you don’t have a yard, patio or balcony, you can still grow food on a windowsill.

If someone in an apartment or a condo without a yard thinks they can’t grow food, well, you can. You can grow microgreens: Just use a pie plate, add some potting soil and dried peas from the grocery store and grow them into little edible green pea sprouts.

You can also use kitchen scraps such as romaine lettuce ends, celery and fennel to grow food or purchase a soil-free countertop AeroGarden kit.

Whether you want to feed your family or your community, take some time to plant edibles this season.

8 Tips for Decorating With Mirrors

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest house of all? Mirrors are a sure way to maximize style in any room, contributing visual dimension and elegance while reflecting light and making a space look larger.
As an interior designer, I know how a well-placed mirror can bring a room from “meh” to “wow.” Before you start hanging mirrors throughout your home, here's what you need to know:

1. Reflect the light

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

I recommend trying to hang mirrors across from a window, if possible, as this reflects light and brightens up a space. Keep in mind anything a mirror faces—whether it be a window, wall or architectural element—will draw the eye and give it more importance.

2. Don't be afraid to go big

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

Large mirrors add depth, making a room feel bigger than it is. In a small room, I recommend leaning a mirror at the end of a hallway or against a wall. Bigger mirrors do tend to be more expensive, so don't be afraid to use smaller mirrors as units, which you can group together to create the same effect.

3. Consider a gallery wall

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

Never underestimate the power of grouping. Use mirrors as a gallery wall to add an artistic twist to your home. Distressed mirrors have recently made a comeback and look beautiful covering an entire wall behind a bathtub or in an entryway.

4. Make it a focal point

Another great option is to to make your mirror prominent with a simple, sophisticated placement. Some great spots include above a dining room buffet or above a mantel, framed with candles or a pair of sconces on either side to add even more light.

5. Pay careful attention to placement

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

This is the most crucial aspect for successfully decorating with mirrors. Unlike art, which is roughly hung at slightly above eye level, mirrors should be hung at a level which allows them to reflect properly. This could mean your mirrors are higher or lower than where you'd usually place your art. If the mirror will be used for function, make sure you don't have to crouch to see your reflection.

6. Let the frame shine

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

The frame tells the story, so consider what style and effect you're going for in the room. Gilded frames evoke Haussman sensibilities, so go for gold if you want to give your room a Parisian vibe. Starburst mirrors have a retro ‘60s vibe and work well in Mid-Century Modern homes.

7. Get creative

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

There are unlimited ways to use mirrored surfaces purely as dΓ©cor. Mirrors capture the reflective element of water, making them popular with Coastal Design styles. A mirrored backsplash in your kitchen is a great way to add shine, while a mirrored vanity or dresser instantly adds a touch of glitz and glamour to your boudoir.

8. Don't ignore the elements of Feng Shui

Vancouver-Realtor-CarmenLeal.ca

Feng Shui experts would caution against mirrors in the bedroom, especially if you're not sleeping well. Avoid hanging mirrors directly in front of an entryway or facing your bed; instead, place them on an adjacent wall so you can take a glance before you leave the house, without draining your qi.
